Musculoskeletal radiology involves imaging soft tissue, bone, and joint abnormalities, including congenital, developmental, traumatic, oncologic and rheumatologic conditions.

Imaging modalities routinely utilized include:

bullet

X-rays,

bullet

Computed tomography (CAT scan),

bullet

Magnetic resonance imaging (MR),

bullet

Ultrasound,

bullet

Nuclear medicine.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). 3 week female breech C-section delivery with left hip click on physical examination. Static (left image) coronal ultrasound image of the left hip demonstrates shallow acetabulum with below normal alpha angle. Dynamic (right image) coronal ultrasound image obtained during Barlow stress maneuver demonstrates subluxation. Early detection of DDH is important to limit malformation of the joint and to facilitate early treatment which takes advantage of the hips ability to remodel during infancy.

MR arthrogram 49 year old woman with left shoulder pain. Axial T1 weighted image with fat saturation demonstrates a nondisplaced posterior labral tear.

j

"MR arthrogram 18 year old football player who sustained a right shoulder injury. Coronal T1 weighted image with fat saturation demonstrates post traumatic osteolysis of the distal clavicle and a superior labral anterior posterior tear (SLAP tear).

j

"AP and frog leg lateral x-rays of the right hip in a 42 year old woman demonstrate decreased anterolateral femoral head neck offset and fibrocystic change as well as degeneration at the superior acetabular margin. Coronal inversion recovery MR image demonstrates a secondary nondisplaced superior labral tear."

"Select Axial T1 images with fat saturation from an MR arthrogram on a 20 year old football player with right shoulder pain following traumatic injury.  Full thickness focal defect in the hyaline articular cartilage of the glenoid fossa with a discrete chondral loose body evident in the inferior joint recess.

Pain at the level of the third metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint radiating into the toe. Coronal T1 weighted image (left) shows a teardrop shaped mass with intermediate signal in the third MTP interspace. Coronal gadolinium enhanced fat suppressed T1 weighted image demonstrates diffuse enhancement of the mass consistent with a Morton's Neuroma (perineural fibroma)
